A switch on the Senate Education Committee

Even before the Senate Education Committee could hold its first meeting Wednesday, the committee’s lineup changed.

Gone is Sen. Don Cheatham, R-Post Falls.

Sen. Carl Crabtree

Back, after a brief absence, is Sen. Carl Crabtree, R-Grangeville.

The Senate shook up the rosters of several committees Wednesday, days after Meridian Republican Sen. Clifford Bayer resigned to take a job as U.S. Rep. Russ Fulcher’s chief of staff.

Crabtree had served on Senate Education in 2017 and 2018. He is starting his second term in the Senate.

Cheatham, a first-term senator, had spent four years in the House, serving on the House Education Committee.

Wednesday’s 45-minute kickoff meeting was long on introductions — with the committee’s page and audience members introducing themselves to lawmakers, and committee members introducing themselves to the audience.

The committee will reconvene on Monday.
