CHICAGO (AP) Drugmaker AbbVie is donating $55 million to three education nonprofits that serve students in high-poverty neighborhoods.
The Illinois-based company on announced the donations Friday.
Communities in Schools will receive $30 million. The organization works with at-risk students in over 2,300 schools nationwide, including in 16 high-need Chicago schools.
City Year will receive $10 million to help place diverse, trained AmeriCorps members into schools to serve as tutors, mentors and role models. The money will help City Year expand its reach to serve more than 18,000 students in 36 Chicago schools over the next five years.
The University of Chicago Education Lab, which is receiving $15 million, partners with Chicago Public Schools and other groups to test methods to improve outcomes for Chicago’s most vulnerable youth.
