LETTER: Education is key to understanding

A Ponoka News reader suggests that an education can help people navigate the world’s issues

Dear Editor,

I believe it is important to educate all the citizens of our country and to make education for them start at a early age.

This is not merely to know the facts about the world we live in but to be clear about what is important to them and to their fellow citizens. In a complicated world an education is one of the most important ways to understand some of the important pieces of our world and to get a toehold into some of the many environments in which we live and negotiate work and other important relationships.

Education is not solely about developing technical skills but also of consciously developing relational skills and self-confidence to work and interact at all levels of our personal world. Not all of us come from backgrounds where education is straight forward and uncomplicated.

Whether there are social or other factors that make our education particularly challenging, some of us might need a hand up occasionally or on an ongoing basis. None of us will ever know everything but we can know important pieces of the world that will help us navigate other social and work situations that are beneficial.

An important question of course is how to reach out to these situations without judging either families or children. Perhaps this is where creativity will be needed mostly by demonstrating that education is ongoing, can happen at all ages and can be a community wide phenomenon and not solely dependent on traditional educational institutions.

When we look at the number of self directed groups in our community it suggests the presence for the ongoing sharing of information and the learning of skills.

When asked why Finland is so impervious to the propaganda from Russia, which shares a border, someone from Finland suggested that Finland’s citizens cannot be dubbed easily because of the education levels it’s citizens have achieved.
