MURRAY — The Murray City Board of Education has approved a salary package that raises starting teacher pay to $50,000 a year, matching what Canyons School District approved earlier this week.
Murray’s board on Thursday also approved a near $7,000 raise for all licensed teachers in a tentative agreement yet to be ratified by the Murray Education Association.
Like Canyons District, a property tax increase will be required to help fund the pay raises, approximately $93 a year on a $250,000 home. A required truth-in-taxation hearing will be conducted in August.
“The proposed tax increase will go 100 percent towards teacher salaries,” a district news release states.
Board President Kami Anderson said the “significant increase” in teacher salaries is “part of our ongoing efforts to show appreciation and support to teachers in the Murray City School District, along with strengthening our ability to hire and retain the best teaching talent possible.”
The teacher salary schedule tops out at $86,291 annually under the near 14 percent compensation increase approved by the school board.
For the current school year, starting pay for Murray teachers was $43,039 and total teacher compensation package was increased just under 4.5 percent.
Anderson said the board is also working on raises for classified employees, noting the board wants all employees to know “we appreciate them and take very seriously our job of providing the students of Murray with the best education possible. Without our outstanding teachers and staff, this would not be possible.”
