The large number of contracts still being negotiated follows a state Supreme Court ruling in June that found the Legislature had satisfied the conditions of the McCleary case – the case that argued the state was not fully funding K-12 education. That ruling triggered additional funding for school districts. It also changed the way state education is funded by limiting revenue from local levies.

Now, unions argue there is as much as $2 billion of new funding for educator salaries. And the unions that represent teachers who have long argued they are getting an unfair cut are now holding out.

This doesn’t mean progress isn’t being made, however. A map created by the Education Association highlights nearly 40 contract settlements that have been reached so far. Teachers in Shoreline, for example, will see a bump in pay, after the maximum annual pay was increased to $120,234.
